I’d never felt so helpless in all my life.

Finding Wade before he did something he’d regret was the only thing on my mind, driving my every step. If he hurt an innocent person, I knew he would never be able to get over it.

I was weary and weak, and drawing in all that fire had taken its toll. I scratched absently at my palms. They stung slightly. I looked down at them and saw the faint red markings of my protection rune. They faded before my eyes, but they’d been there.

A surge of hope had me racing inside to find a map. We were connected. I simply had to find a way to make that bond work for me.

Gran’s set of maps was older than she was, but she’d used them for scrying and infused them with light magic for years. I flipped through until I found Tennessee. Unfolded, the giant glossy map gave me a large area to use.

I touched my right hand to my heart and cast a follow-your-heart spell before proceeding. Then, with that hope still propelling me on, I took the chain with Wade’s ring off my neck and held it over the map. I breathed once for luck and blew the breath onto the ring, again for giving life to the spell, and finally a third breath for increased power to be drawn to me. The ring spun on the chain.

I held it above my hand like I’d done with a pendulum many times before and asked it to speak to me. I started with simple things to test it.

Is my hair black?

The ring moved slightly then increased momentum, gliding north to south. Yes.

Is my name Sienna?

The ring didn’t move. I had a moment’s panic. I rephrased the question. Am I called Sienna?

North to south. Yes.

I was relieved and a little curious why it stalled on that question, but I didn’t have time to find out.

Is Wade near?

East to west. No.

Can I find Wade?

Yes.

Has he gone to the Smoky Mountains?

Emphatic yes.

Is Bre in danger?

Emphatic yes.

I gulped and asked what I was afraid to ask. Will Wade hurt Bre?

The ring jumped on the chain and then swung diagonally. That was an indefinite. Don’t know.

I eased my hand out from under the chain and held the ring over the map at various spots, asking if he were near at each location. When I landed over the Smoky Mountains, the ring swung wildly north to south and then landed on a section of the mountain range where the elevation showed it steep and secluded.

I wrote down the location and the roads that would get me there. I was hours away, and I needed to be there faster than that. It couldn’t be helped though. I’d have to drive the long distance in my old truck.

I packed my camping and hiking gear, which had seen better days, and shoved a week’s worth of food into the coolers with ice and a stasis spell to keep it all fresh. I showered quickly, threw on lightweight clothes, my yoga pants and a t-shirt.
